Innovative Insulation for Radiant Floor Heating in New Hope

A homeowner in New Hope, PA, at 521 Street Rd, recently built a workshop with the goal of installing radiant floor heating for a warm and comfortable workspace. To optimize the heating system’s performance, it was crucial to install insulation directly under the concrete slab, which would encapsulate the heating coils.

Traditionally, sheets of foam are used for this purpose, but they pose challenges. The seams between the sheets can allow heat to escape, and the sheets themselves are brittle, often breaking under the weight of workers during the concrete pour.

To overcome these issues, we utilized a more robust solution by spraying 2 inches of closed-cell foam directly onto the stone base. This method not only eliminated the problems associated with foam sheets but also created a durable, seamless insulation layer. Within an hour of application, the surface was strong enough to support workers walking on it without any damage.

Before the insulation was applied, the homeowner had wisely run all necessary utilities into the floor. Once our part was completed, the concrete floor was installed directly over the newly insulated base, ensuring optimal functionality and efficiency of the radiant heating system. This approach not only maximizes heat retention and distribution but also enhances the overall durability and usability of the workshop.
