Spray Foam Insulation

Residential Spray Foam Glen Mills, PA

Spray Foam Insulators recently completed a residential spray foam insulation project in Glen Mills, PA to correct major comfort and HVAC performance issues in a large home with an unusable third floor.

The homeowner struggled with extreme temperatures on the third floor, making it uncomfortable in both summer and winter.

Project Overview

  • Location: Glen Mills, PA
  • Home Type: Large multi-story residence
  • Problem Area: Third floor and unfinished attic
  • Scope of Work: Knee wall air sealing, attic insulation upgrades
  • Foam Type Used: Open-cell spray foam

The Challenge

The third-floor space was essentially unusable due to temperature extremes. The home’s HVAC ductwork was located behind the knee walls, and vented soffits allowed outside air to flow directly behind those walls, creating a counterproductive airflow pattern.

Outside air was in direct contact with the HVAC ductwork—a double negative. The ductwork was losing conditioned air to the outdoors, while outside air was infiltrating the living space. The result was a heating system that ran almost nonstop and still struggled to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Additionally, the unfinished attic was contributing to a significant stack effect, where warm air rises and escapes, pulling cold air into lower levels of the home.

Our Spray Foam Solution

We first installed proper baffles to vent the fiberglass insulation in the sheet-rocked roof areas, ensuring proper airflow where required.

Then, we sealed the area behind the knee walls with open-cell spray foam, creating a continuous air barrier that eliminated infiltration of outside air and protected the ductwork from direct exposure.

We also sprayed the unfinished attic space to reduce the stacking effect throughout the home and improve overall air sealing.

Results

The difference was immediate. After installation, the heater began cycling normally rather than running continuously. The third floor is now usable year-round, with dramatically improved comfort and temperature consistency.

By properly sealing the knee wall cavities and attic areas, the home’s HVAC system now operates efficiently rather than fighting outside air intrusion.

Spray Foam Insulators continues to deliver high-performance residential insulation solutions backed by an outstanding online reputation and customer reviews.
