The Challenge

Despite being a newer custom home, the homeowner was experiencing unusually high heating bills and noticeable temperature inconsistencies throughout the house.

The home’s very high roof peaks were magnifying what’s known as the stack effect — where warm air rises and escapes through ridge vents at the top of the structure. As heat continually escaped through the attic, the heating system had to work harder, resulting in higher energy costs and discomfort.

Our Spray Foam Solution

To correct the issue, we installed open-cell spray foam along the roofline, effectively air-sealing the attic and converting it into an unvented attic assembly.

By insulating the roof deck rather than the attic floor, we created a continuous thermal and air barrier that prevents warm air from escaping through the ridge vent. This dramatically reduces heat loss, stabilizes indoor temperatures, and allows the HVAC system to operate more efficiently.

Results

The home now benefits from a significantly tighter building envelope. The stack effect has been minimized, indoor comfort has improved, and heating costs are expected to drop substantially moving forward.
