He talks about the recent adoption of IRC 2021 by the state of New Jersey and soon to be adopted by Pennsylvania and other states. Joe explains how to create an R-30 wall cavity and an R-60 roof cavity. He suggests using a double wall studded exterior wall to allow for a continuous monolithic pour of foam insulation across the whole exterior of the house. This method will bridge the thermal break and exceed the 2021 energy code.

The R-30 wall cavity is a bit of a challenge because putting foam board on the outside can impact the installation of windows and doors. Joe suggests using offset double two by fours, with a two by four on the exterior 16 inch on center and one on the inside 16 inch on center on a two by six plate. This can also be done with two by threes on the interior. Structural engineers are working on increasing the stud spacing, which will save money.

Joe explains that the cost of spray foam is the same whether doing a two by six wall or a double studded wall. The labor to do the double stud was minimal according to the framer that framed this house. The new code is trying to bridge the thermal break, and 20% to 25% of all the exterior walls in the house are wood studs. Open cell foam in a double studded wall can accomplish this and exceed the 2021 energy code.
